MY MISSION
I am finding out that to create something you’re passionate about is not as easy as I once thought it was. Even if you think about pursuing that one thing all the time, actually doing it is something completely different. The planning, brainstorming, and will-power needed to create something unique and tailored to your creative desires is something that is very hard to get right. It’s near impossible to begin working on something and have everything go the way you want/expect it to. But, the obstacle is the way and I will not let perfect be the enemy of my good.
Blue Tiger Records is anything but perfect. It has morphed and formed into something that is completely different than what I imagined it would be. However, I am proud of what this site has become, and what it has showed me about myself. Being from sleepy Cape Elizabeth, a small town near Portland, Maine, there’s not many offerings of activities beyond school, nature and community without going into the city. So I choose to occupy my time with music.
Since I can remember, my father always played an eclectic mix of music, anchored in rock and roll. He refuses to listen to commercials and the trashy music playing on the radio. He has curated his favorite music and has played it for me ever since I could hear. He sang me to sleep with lullabies and is pretty handy with a guitar. He has some incredible vintage speakers and is not afraid to “exercise” them. He has the best music taste I know and I aspire to have even a fraction of the musical knowledge that he has. He is open to new music and is thrilled to find a new favorite. He has inspired me to explore my own taste without losing sight of the inspirations and roots of older music. Every day I approach Blue Tiger Records with those same ideals. To not only explore the new music I love, but keep the classic stuff in mind and connect the threads. I am intrigued and captivated by the wonders and history of music.
I have also found that music “scenes” are one of the keys to musical growth. Wonderful artists with an original and widely known sound now, started by first forming a smaller community first. For example, Jazz’s humble beginning was in New Orleans and started with small and passionate gatherings of people who enjoyed creating a new and free form of music regardless of other people’s opinions and tastes. Music scenes are extremely important to the growth of originality and creativity. That’s why it’s my mission to not only explore the current main stream of music and its trends, the foundations of music that precedes it, but also explore and document new and lesser known artists and Portland’s music scene.
